From Kisses To Cringes

WEST HOLLYWOOD

Trevor stood near the entrance of the café and grabbed Delia’s hand, whispering in her ear. “You’re a sight for sore eyes.”

There was something in his gaze, an expression almost of excited desperation.

“What’s going on?” Delia asked.

“Come here.” He pulled her toward the alley beside the café. Metal garbage cans lined both sides of graffiti-covered walls. The smell of frying chicken wafted their way.

“Where are we–?”

In an instant Delia was in his arms, his hungry lips on hers. She didn’t skip a beat as adrenaline shot through her veins. Her hands dug into Trevor’s thick hair, the scent of his musky aftershave intoxicating.

Trevor’s grip was firm on her waist, leaving no more than a millimeter separating them. He kissed her for a full minute with a fierce passion. When he finally pulled back, his voice was hoarse. “I’ve been waiting to do that all day.”

Still in a dreamy fog, Delia’s eyes were at half-mast. “Wow,” she said. “If that’s your new greeting, I’m seriously digging it.”

A cat bolted from behind a garbage can and shot by past them. Delia shrieked, falling awkwardly back into Trevor’s waiting arms. “Can we make out somewhere else next time?”

He laughed. “I’ll see what I can do. At least here we don’t have to worry about running into anyone.”

“True.” She scanned the alley for any other surprises, gripping Trevor’s hand hard. “Can we eat something now?”

“Right, I nearly forgot that’s what we’re here for.”

Delia’s spiked heels clacked loudly on the gray linoleum floors. She tucked her gold necklace into the collar of her silk white blouse and closed the top button. “I think I’m a bit overdressed for this place.”

Trevor led her to a metal table in the corner. “You’re over everything for this place.”

The café was clean but old with cracked laminated menus. A heavily made up woman with a pencil stuck behind her ear, approached them. “What can I get for you kids?”

The waitress was within five years either side of Delia.

“Kids?” Delia asked.

The waitress smiled. “Makes the customers feel good.”

Trevor said, “Good business practice.”

“We’ve been here since 1982 so we must be doing something right.”

Delia was perusing the menu. “I’m starved. What’s your most popular dish?” She looked up.

The waitress studied Delia's face. “I know you.” She scrunched up her features as if working out a puzzle.

Delia said, “I doubt it.”

“No, give me a sec.”

A look of amusement crossed Trevor’s face. Delia was getting irritated. She was starving and would need to get back to the office soon. And there was no way she and the waitress had ever crossed paths before.

“Delia Campbell!” the waitress shouted. “Right?”

Several patrons turned to look. One twenty-something's gaze fell on Delia, her eyes widening in recognition.

Trevor’s brow hit the ceiling as he looked between the two women. “Long lost sisters?”

Delia said, “How do you know my name?”

The waitress lifted a finger. “I’ll be right back,” she said, excitedly.

“Wait!” Delia shouted after her. “Bring me the house salad, a nonfat latte, and a blueberry muffin!” She turned to Trevor.
